Rich & Elaine's Overseas AdventuresMekong Delta VietnamThe Mekong River Delta is the rice bowl of Vietnam and yields enough rice for the whole country plus a surplus, farming is intensive and although the region is rural it is one of the most densely populated areas of Vietnam. The Delta is formed by sediment deposited by the Mekong River and extends the shore line by 80metres annually. Known as the Nine Dragon River in Vietnam the famous Mekong River’s source is 2800miles away in Tibet and filters through India, Laos and Cambodia where the river splits into two main rivers, then finally in Vietnam breaks up into a more complex system creating a maze of rivers and small canals spotted with villages and floating markets. Your Delta adventure will start in Ho Chi Minh City, a 3 to 4 hour drive on a very crowded, busy road, you will see many amazing sights from the coach window, like live pigs or cows with their legs tied and strapped on the back of motor bikes, their curly or wiry tails twitching as they weave in and out of the traffic. There are excellent one to four day trips where you are totally looked after by your friendly Vietnamese guides, transport is comfortable and the food is great. This is an experience not to be missed, these trips are available from all travel agents and hotels in Ho Chi Minh City and are designed so visitors can explore quaint river towns and experience the busy river traffic, you will see cargo boats and colourful fishing vessels going about their business, join the bartering culture for goods from floating markets and stay at rustic home stays. An island like Phu Quoc is a great place to relax, it is forested, has fresh water springs, white sandy beaches with great diving and cheap beach bungalows or five star hotels. Day tours take you through the canals, villages, tasting the local food and fruit, sampling snake wine, riding in donkey and cart through quaint roads and canoeing up the canals all in a day’s adventure and the tour guides are very informative and helpful. Bike tours are also popular and range from 3-4 days allowing you to mingle with the day to day life and include all transport and meals. The Mekong Delta is a great day adventure, every minute of the day there is activity, you become immersed in the strong Vietnamese culture and life in the Delta revolves around the river; villages are accessible by river rather than by road and the Mekong River is a natural passageway through to Cambodia. Best time to go is when you can, but make sure you do, don’t miss it – it’s a great experience. Rich & Elaines Home Page ---> <--- Go to Vietnam |
