Nursing In Australia - A Guide To Working & Living As A Nurse Down Under.
Australia, I found is a perfect country to travel and adventure in, the climate is great, the ocean inviting and the medical infrastructure and technology is state of the art, the natives are friendly and welcoming and the travelling nurse is very well respected. The easiest way to find a position as a travelling nurse is to join a recognised nursing agency. There are many reputable agencies in Australia, the advantage being that you are offered options depending on your skills, previous experience and desired locations, the agencies guarantee travelling nurses a good quality of living conditions and travel reimbursement within the country. Travelling nurses, or agency nurses as they are commonly called are required to be a Registered Nurse, Midwife or Endorsed Enrolled Nurse with a currant practising certificate for the State of Australia that they wish to work in, I hear from the coal face that the whole country will have one registration by June31st 2010. To comply with an agency’s policies there are health and cultural requirements, you will also need a police clearance and referees. Meantime, being registered in the state of Australia where you choose to work is essential and the nursing agency will assist you in this.Large towns and cities are always looking for skilled travelling nurses in specialised areas such as ICU, CCU, theatre, maternity, mental health and accident and emergency. Previous experience is an advantage, but not essential. Rural hospitals also require short term nurses, the travelling nurse needs to be flexible and as multi skilled as possible with excellent accident and emergency skills. Remote Area Clinics are scattered throughout the Australian outback in agricultural, aboriginal or mining communities. These clinics are generally open from 8am to 5pm with on call requirements. Often in these remote communities you will be required to drive the ambulance and often they will provide a vehicle for use in the local area. The agencies communicate with the travelling nurse during the contract to ensure the nurse is comfortable and happy with their contract and there are no problems. It is also advisable for you to keep the agency in the loop. If being a travelling nurse is you and you are in need of an adventure this can be a great career option. I personally like to run away from the chills of winter and throw myself into a small community in Australia and enjoy baring the feet, swimming in warm pools or ocean, and exploring. It’s great.
